The Problem:
Texas’s deregulated system IS the problem. It helps make a few big companies mega wealthy while simultaneously leaving millions of consumers in the dark, with higher bills and no electricity when Texans need it most. The winter storm disaster is just the last straw. Texans have been dealing with predatory retail energy providers, higher than average electricity bills and an utterly UNRELIABLE grid for years. The deregulated market is not consumer friendly. It’s time to change a system that benefits the big and powerful few over the needs of everyday Texas consumers. If the system is not fixed, the problem will get even worse, with more disasters to come.
The Solution:
Updated, common-sense regulation starts with utility rules that do not permit the big and powerful to write the rules for their own benefit. Legislation such as Rep. Larson’s bill, HB 4323, is a very good start. It works to undo lax regulations that helped lead the most recent electricity disaster, and will prevent future grid failures. Texans deserve a TRULY reliable grid and energy market. Two decades ago Texas tried de-regulation, and it flat out did not work, as everyone now knows. It’s time to change the system! Let’s support Rep. Larson on this legislation. It’s a step in the right direction and a big step forward for Texas energy reliability and affordability.
