With holiday season now in full swing, thoughts of hazardous products hiding on shelves or in warehouses are largely an afterthought.
However, with bad actors always lurking and ready to spread deceptive claims to make a profit, consumer safety must be a top-of-mind priority across the nation, and in Florida especially.
Florida residents are uniquely susceptible to the dangers of misinformation and manipulative marketing.
According to the Population Research Bureau, Florida features the second highest percentage of adults aged 65 years and older in the country. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission reported that older adults are more likely to be deceived by faulty advertisements and scams, most notably for health-related products. This is precisely why our state leaders need to focus on consumer product safety year-round.
Medical innovation has led to an explosion of new products on the market, but without well-communicated regulations from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to serve as guardrails from potential hazards, unscrupulous companies can do great damage to consumer health.
