Newest Front in Biden’s Crusade on Career Colleges
Welcome back to Higher Ed on the Hill where we break down the top issues driving higher education policy. Up to bat: the Department of Education’s attack on our nation’s largest Christian institution – Grand Canyon University.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Grand Canyon University is being fined a whopping $37.7 million fine amid accusations that it misled students about the cost of doctoral programs, see the WSJ’s rebuttal here.
- Per Fox News, GCU and the DoE go way back – all rooting back to the Department refusing to acknowledge the institution as a non-profit organization. GCU has sued the Department twice with the second appeal still pending. In the meantime, the Department is retaliating through a tried-and-true tactic – forcible closure.
- But this fight goes beyond surface level, and more and more schools are being targeted. The Department has a history of opposing career colleges and non-traditional colleges that provide on-the-job experience and flexible hours. They hate colleges they cannot control, and this is selective enforcement at its finest.
- If you don’t assimilate to their “woke” ideology, consider yourself next.
From our perspective, this move by the Biden administration is simply a new tactic to shutter career schools and cut off working parents, veterans, and non-traditional learners from less-favored educational programs. They’ve done it to Florida Career College, CollegeAmerica, Stevens-Henager College, Independence University …. And now Liberty and GCU.
