With Americans still struggling from high energy prices amid President Biden’s attacks on oil & gas production, Republicans have remained largely unified in leading the charge in favor of more domestic energy production. Standing steadfast against the policies of Biden’s first two years that led to mammoth price spikes and supply shortages, the new GOP House majority is the only reason Americans aren’t shelling out even more of their money to cool their homes or fill their tanks.
The Republican firewall against environmental extremism and its flimsy rationale for clogging the pipes of the fossil fuel industry is a winner at the ballot box, and is a cornerstone of its pro-consumer, pro-business platform. Yet shockingly, some Republicans in reliably red Alaska are now indicating an openness to taking the disastrous Biden bike-path on energy. This would be a major mistake, for Alaska, and Republicans everywhere.
Facing challenging budget decisions, Alaskans are now dealing with a swarm of environmental activist groups seizing the opportunity to push for massive tax increases on oil & gas production, industries that account for an astounding 85 percent of state revenue and supply over 10 percent of all jobs.
To add insult to industry, the energy tax legislation is cleverly designed to target what has been the saving grace for energy producing states like Alaska in recent years – small and medium sized oil & gas companies. As large and publicly traded energy companies have taken fire from extreme activists and politicians, these smaller and privately owned companies have become even more important to Alaska’s and our national economy because they are less vulnerable to political pressure.
