Today Consumer Action for a Strong Economy (CASE) voiced support for Senator Roger Wicker’s (R-MS) call for a new hearing on Biden FCC nominee Gigi Sohn. Ms. Sohn appeared before a Senate panel last year, but Wicker’s call for a new hearing is necessitated by unresolved ethical issues concerning her part in a $32 million settlement agreement with a streaming service, on which Ms. Sohn served on the board.
“We believe that this very controversial nominee, who already has a history of political activism adverse to the role of a fair and impartial arbiter of America’s broadcasting industry, demands further scrutiny in light of the strong potential for ethical conflicts with broadcasting entities she would be regulating as an FCC commissioner,” said CASE chairman Gerard Scimeca.
“Democrats on the Commerce Committee have all but admitted her position is compromised on key regulatory issues by crafting recusal guidelines in an attempt to lead her away from ethical landmines she herself planted. This new information underscores that Ms. Sohn has not yet been thoroughly vetted with regard to how her past dealings will impact her actions, credibility, and ethics as an FCC commissioner.”
