Consumer Action for a Strong Economy (CASE) issued a statement today applauding the Supreme Court decision handed down earlier this morning that effectively ends the federal ban on states issuing their own laws on sports wagering. With a strong majority, the Court ruled that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was an unconstitutional infringement upon the people of each state to set their own gaming laws. Said CASE President Matt Kandrach:
“This is a great day for the American people across all 50 states, as this decision strengthens our personal economic liberties while restoring to the states the right to determine their own laws on activities left to them by the Constitution.
“For too long PASPA has helped support organized crime by driving sports betting underground, where billions of dollars are wagered illegally every year on black markets across our nation. With a clear majority of Americans now in support of legalized sports betting, the path is now open for legalized betting in every state, with regulation, oversight and protections for American consumers to now enjoy this growing pastime.”
